Rams Win Rain-Shortened Game

Shelbyville (17-2) stayed in a tie for 1st place in the conference (6-1), by beating Maroa and the rain on Thursday, 4-1.

The rain did come, but not until the Rams had a 4-1 lead through five innings. Shelby scored two out of the gate and then two more in the 3rd. Andrew Hawkins and the Ram defense didn't allow a run until the 4th.

Hawkins threw a 1-hitter in the rain-shortened game and ran his record to 8-1. He allowed one unearned run, walking two, and striking out three in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Shelbyville out-hit Maroa 6 to 1. Maroa's starter, Frank, gave out three free passes and both teams booted the ball four times. Hits, walks, and errors translated to 12 base runners for the Rams and just seven for Maroa.

Jake Keown led the Ram hitters from the #2 slot, going 3-for-4 and reaching base all four times. The first time he reached on an aerror and ended up scoring. The #4 hitter Nate Standerfer was 1-for-2 and a run and a run batted in, Eli Miller was 1-for-4 with a run and Garrett Manship was 1-for-3.

The Rams got two early, when Miller led off the game with a hit. Keown reached on an error and Miller scored on two passed balls. Luke Hatfield walked and Standerfer hit a sac fly to score Keown, 2-0.

In the 2nd, Maroa got a lead-off single, but Hawkins started a double play with a ball hit back to the mound. Neil Yockey turned it at 2nd and Standerfer snagged the throw to beat the batter at 1st. Maroa got the next man on with a dropped 3rd strike, but Keown ended the inning on a ground ball and a throw to 1st.

In the 3rd, Shelby doubled their lead. Standerfer led off with a single and Yockey walked. Another passed ball put Standerfer at 3rd. Hawkins grounded out, but scored Standerfer. Luke McConnell then hit a sac fly to center and Yockey tagged up and score, 4-0 Rams.
