Athlete of the Week

The Daily Union Athletes of the Week have been standouts all season, one expected, one not-so.

Senior Luke Hatfield has led the Shelbyville baseball team in RBIs and home runs every season. He was expected to repeat. Senior Jake Keown would be counted on as part of the pitching staff, a fielder and to get on base. But Keown has exceeded expectations.

Keown is a perfect 4-0 as a starter with a Top Ten ERa of just 1.18 and that is a Ram bonus. Most recently Keown beat Pana and Central A&M. He had six strikeouts in a complete game win over Pana. He had another 6-K, complete game shutout over A&M, allowing just three hits and walking just two.

Hitting, Keown was 2-for-3 v. Monticello and 2-for-4 v. St. Anthony. Against Maroa, he was 3-for-4 and reached base four times.

Hatfield has four home runs and 17 RBIs in a week, including a grand salami. He was 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI v. Monticello, then 3-for-3, with two home runs, and 7 RBIs v. St. Anthony. He was 2-for-2 with two more doubles and two RBIs against Meridian. Against A&M, Hatfield was 2-for-3 with two home runs, a 3-run blast and a grand slam, with seven more RBIs.

Hatfield leads the area with nine homers and is 2nd with 33 RBIs, hitting .458.
