Ram Tennis Beats Southeast

With a host of good athletes who are 1st year players, the Shelbyville boys tennis team has had to learn on the fly. On Thursday, it all clicked as the Rams swept Springfield Southeast, 9-0

"We played very well last night, said Ram coach Ross Forlines. "We have drilled a lot in practice lately to improve our consistency. It paid off against Springfield."

Shelby's #1 Nathan Vasko won in straight sets over Richard Hayes, 6-3, 6-0. Darin Breeden (#2) defeated John Mendenhall in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Ram #3 Tristan Wade held off Jordan Stelixan, 6-2, 7-6.

"Tristan had to win a 2nd set tiebreak to get his victory," Coach Forlines said. "He scored when it counted."

Jared Finley, Shelby's #4 singles player knocked off Nick Yathaputanam, 6-0, 6-2. Even the Shelby #5 and #6 singles players sailed through their matches.

"Ben Houska (#5) made quick work of his opponent, Jade Potchara, winning in straight sets (6-1, 6-1)," Forlines said.

Adam Hudson (#6) shutout his opponent Ted Lewis, 6-0, 6-0.

"Adam Hudson (#6) has been improving all year," Forlines said. "I was glad to see him play well in singles. However, I thought he looked even better in doubles."

Breeden and Hudson teamed up for #2 doubles and put down Stelixan and Yathaputanam, 6-0, 6-0. Vasko and Finley, playing #1 doubles won, 6-0, 7-5.

"Nathan and Jared struggled a bit in the second set of their match," Forlines said, "but they did a great job of finishing when they needed to."

Dakota Pruemer and Cameron Barker stepped up in #3 doubles to make the sweep complete.

"Dakota and Cameron got forced into service, but they played incredibly well, considering they had not played doubles together this year," Coach Forlines said. "I think Dakota has shown a lot of progress this year as a player. He has consistently improved. Cameron usually plays with Vasko, but his size make him tough at the net regardless of who he teams with."

Shelbyville tennis plays at home vs. Mt. Zion.
