---- — Shelby Legion baseball (Posts 289/611/725) is on a roll. After two recent sweeps, on Tuesday they mauled Moultrie-Douglas, 18-5.
Chief mauler was Shelbyville Slugger Luke Hatfield, who hit back-to-back grand slams and then a third consecutive home run, a solo shot, for a total of nine RBIs, all off round-trippers.
Shelby pounded out 16 hits, twice as many as Moultrie-Douglas. Eleven Shelby batters hit safely and four had multiple hits. Hatfield was 3-for-5, Gunner Theis was 2-for-3, Hayden Cole was 2-for-5, and Neil Yockey was 2-for-3.
Moultrie-Douglas had a 2-0 lead off a hit batter and two singled in the 2nd. The mauling occurred in the top of the 3rd, a 14-run beat down.
Shelby had only has two base runners the first two innings, off a hit batter and a walk. Trevor Moore then lit the fuse with a lead-off single. Yockey walked, and Michael Baker singled to load the bases.
Jake Keown singled a run in and Thies singled a run in to tie the score, 2-2. Still with no outs, the first five batters reaching base and the bases jammed, the mighty Hatfield came to the plate.
Hatfield hammered the first pitch and with one swing of the bat jolted Shelby into the lead with a grand slam, 6-2 Shelby.
Still with no outs, Cole singled. That retired the Mo-Do starter. Andrew Hawkins greeted the new pitcher with a single, making it eight straight batters reaching base.
After a fly out Moore and Yockey walked, the 9th and 10th batters out of 11 to reach base. Ben Helton walked and Keown walked for three walks in a row. Theis singled again in the inning and drove in his second run.
Hatfield came to the plate again in the 3rd with the bases loaded and with one strike hit his second grand slam of the inning, off a second pitcher, to cap the 14-run inning.
There was no mercy rule in this game, so Moultrie-Douglas couldn’t wiggle of the spit.
Christian Vonderheide the Shelby Legion ace was still in control. He gave up just two runs on three hits over four innings, walked no one and struck out six.
Leading 14-2, Shelby twisted the knife in the 5th. Mo-Do reliever Zach Bates got the first batter to pop out. But, Hatfield came up and he hit a 3-2 pitch for his third home run in a row, his second off Bates.
Cole followed with a single and Hawkins reached on an error. With two outs, Vonderheide reached on an error and Yockey drew another walk, forcing in a run. With the bases loaded, Helton hit a 2-run single for an 18-2 lead.
Shelby had spent their ammo, but still gave off some sparks in the next two innings, while Moultrie-Douglas managed to get off a few rounds before they succumbed to their wounds.
In the 6th, Bates singled and Luke Armstrong doubled. Tristan Williams walked, but Shelby turned a double play starting with shortstop Vonderheide to 2nd baseman Yockey to 1st baseman Hawkins. A wild pitch allowed the second run of the inning to score, 18-4 Shelby.
Mo-Do added a run in the bottom of the 7th, when Bates doubled and the other Bates doubled him home, 18-5. Shelby Legion was to travel to Odin on Wednesday, then play at St. Anthony on Saturday at 1 p.m. and host Teutopolis at Windsor on Sunday at 1 p.m.
