Windsor splits to open tourney

Windsor Trojan basketball opened the Cerro Gordo Tournament with a split. Windsor 7th grade defeated Bement, 39-27, while Windsor 8th was doubled-up by their Bement counterparts, 40-20.

The Trojan 7th grade got off to a 5-point lead in the 1st period and rode that cushion throughout the 1st half, as Bement all but played them even in the 2nd period. The Trojans led 20-13 at the break.

Like in the 1st, the Trojans came out of the locker room with a bit of a push, putting on a 10-4 run in the 3rd. That additional cushion gave them a 13-point lead heading into the final frame.

Bement summoned up a 10-9 advantage down the stretch, but it wasn’t near enough to deflate the Trojan margin of victory.

Three Trojans were in double figures in the win. Ben Beck led with 11 points, while Jackson Miller and Logan Greuel followed with 10 points, each. Their leadership was enough to out-score Bement’s total output. Beau Bennett, Tucker Cripe and Caleb LeCrone help pad the double-digit win.

In the 8th grade game, the Trojans faded as the game wore on. They were only down two points after the 1st. They were down just five at the break, 15-10.

In the 3rd, with a Bement 10-5 run, the reality of a loss started to sink in. Enjoying a 10-point deficit with 6:00 to play, 25-15, Bement smelled blood and opened up a 15-5 final run to win by 20.

Gage Sattler led the Trojans with 13 of their 20 points. Just two more teammates scored, Gavin Bennett with six and Jon Trussel with a single point.
