SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Moulton volleyball was looking forward to a date on Thursday against Pana. The Shelby 8th came away satisfied, 25-13, 26-24, but Shelby 7th was ready to go back to the drawing board, losing 16-25, 12-25.
Once again, the returning state runner-ups 8th grade dominated in game one, then let down in game two and coasted to a win.
“We did some things we haven’t earlier, like be tougher at the net with the block, which is nice,” said Ram 8th coach Lisa Peifer. “After controlling the first game, we are starting a pattern of not being as aggressive in the second game. We just didn’t control the serve receive pass like we should have and gave them a few runs. Our offense is picking up and our serves are getting tougher. Pana will be in our regional, so it was a good win for us.”
Maddie Holland led the way for the Ram 8th serving up a team-high 15 points with a team-high three aces. She also was one of three Rams with three kills and had one of five Ram blocks.
Jacque Johnston was a service leader again, with 13 points. She also led the defense with six digs and a block. She also had almost half the assists.
Cailin Wilson was the third ram in double digits. She had 10 points with three aces and delivered three kills. Sydney Miller also had three kills and four digs. Caylee Wheeler led the team in assists, dishing out five. The Rams had nine assists for 10 kills. Torre Koontz led the block party with two of the five blocks.

The 7th grade started well, then went in the tank to lose a too-quick, two game set.
“We started out great and really played some decent volleyball early on,” said Ram 7th coach Brittany Pierce. “We then allowed Pana a little service run and seemed to break down mentally from there. These girls still need to realize what a mental game volleyball is and how important it is for them to maintain positive attitudes. They are way too hard on themselves right now and it is very frustrating. It is just going to take some time, I guess, for them to have fun and feel comfortable on the court. Right now it is hard to find the right chemistry. We definitely have lot to think about before our next match.”
Jordan Bruder led the 7th grade again at the line, serving eight points with one ace. She also was a kill-leader with three kills. Blair Rodman had the other three Ram kills, while Savannah Marty had three of the four Ram assists.
