SHELBYVILLE, IL. — After an up and down season and a 1st round regional win, the Shelbyville Moulton 8th grade lost a heart-breaking, barn-burner to Pana on Monday in the Pana Regional to end their season, 55-54.

What was particularly heart-breaking was the way the Rams lost. They were up by 14 points heading into the final 6:00, 41-27. Pana came back from the dead with a 28-13 run to win by a point. Pana only had 27 points through three quarters and scored 28 with the season on the line.

The Rams should have won the game. They had one, almost two, 20-point scorers. They out-shot Pana from the arc 8 to 3, for a 13-point advantage from distance. The Rams out-scored Pana 44-39 from the floor. Their floor game was amazing.

What cost the Rams the game was foul shooting. Shelby shot 22 free throws, but made just 10, missing 12 free throws in a 1-point loss. Pana shot 21 free throws and made 16.

Pana came back in the 4th period, down 14, making 11-of-12 free throws. Shelby shot 17 free throws in the 4th, but made just five. Shelby shot more free throws, but made seven less.

Pana opened the game with a 14-9 run. Stauder, who had 16 points in the game, had a pair of treys and Miller, who had a game-high 24, scored three times. Shelby got just three 3-pointers in the 1st. Hunter Plummer had 2 of his 5 triples in the 1st and big man Dillon Birch had the other early trey.

But Pana was held to just 13 points in the middle quarters, while Shelby erupted. Shelby had a 21-6 run in the 2nd to take the lead. Hunter had two more treys and Keaton Plummer got going with four scores and 2-of-2 foul shooting for 10 points in the 2nd. Shelby led by 10 points at the break, 30-20.

Shelby added to their lead in the 3rd with an 11-7 run. Keaton made a pair of treys, while Hunter had a deuce and a trey. Shelby led by 14 heading into the final frame, 41-27.

In the 4th, Pana came out like gangbusters. Pana scored eight times from the floor, one trey. Stauder and Miller both scored nine points in crunch time. Shelby scored just four times from the floor. Pana also made 11-of-12 at the line, while the Rams just made 5-of-17. Pana’s 28-13 run in the 4th erased the Ram 14-point lead.

Hunter Plummer led the Rams with 20 points, including his five 3-pointers. Keaton Plummer followed with 19 points, including two treys.
