SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville girls basketball lost a close game on opening night to Okaw Valley, but on Thursday, they were able to come back from a double-digit deficit and squeeze past Brownstown for a close win, 44-42.
"We had a five point lead, but then we got into foul trouble and were down 11 at the half," said Ram coach Greg Reynolds. "We started to panic, but we held on to pull it out. Now they know they can do it."
Shelbyville had to do it again without starting power forward Jami Hennings, who was injured during the Okaw game on Monday.
Shelbyville had climbed back into it in the 3rd quarter and were down by just four with a minute until the 4th, 32-28. Brownstown scored to beat the buzzer and lead by six heading into thefinal frame, 34-28.
After a Bomber miss to start the 4th, Tiffany Heselton buried a three from the key, making it a 3-point game. Brownstown went up 36-31 and the Rams Lindsay Floyd (Windsor) fought for a rebound and was fouled. She sank both free throws
The next time down the floor, Madison Boone droveinside then dished it out to Floyd for a trey, competing the Ram comeback and tying the game, 36-36, with 5:00 to play.
The Bombers scored off a steal, then scored inside, 40-36. After a near-steal at mid-court, Ram post player Lindsay Burton (Stew-Stras) threw a skip pass to Boone, then cut inside. Boone got her the ball and she put it up past two defender, got the bucket, and the foul. 40-38.
Ram point guard Courtney Schultz (Stew-Stras) stole the ball and brought it back for a fast break 2, knottying the score again with 2:20 to play, 40-40.
Burton then got a steal and took it hard to the hole.She was fouled and made 1-of-2 for a Ram lead, 41-40 with 2:09 to play. Floyd got a steal for the third straight Ram steal in three Bomber possessions.
Brownstown split a pair at the line and tied the score, 41-41. Brownstown put on a stifling press, but the Rams finally got it to Burton, who broke the press and got a lay-up, 43-41, with 1:15 to play.
Brownstown made one free throws with 57 seconds left, 43-42. With 23 seconds remaining in the game, Olivia Williamson was foulr on a jump shot from the wing. She made the front end of a 1-and-1, 44-42.
Both teams had misses and Schultz hustled a rebound and brought it to the Ram side. She was fouled and went to the line with six seconds left. She missed, but Brownston had to beat the clock and turned the ball over, giving Shelby the win.
