SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelby Legion dominated Moultrie-Douglas Legion last Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader and not allowing a single run, 10-0 and 7-0. Mo-Do undid that on Thursday at the Firecracker Tourney in Mattoon, beating Shelby, 5-2.
Tristan Williams was effective when he came on in relief in the 2nd game of that doubleheader on Sunday, allowing one run in four innings. He started on Thursday and was just as effective as he was Sunday.
Williams held Shelby to just two runs on four hits. He did walk six, while striking out five. By contrast the Shelby starter fell into an unfortunate trend plaguing Shelby this season, giving up runs early. Mark Jones gave up three runs in the 1st inning.
Jones gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out three in six innings of work. Shelby also booted the ball four times, one player committed three errors. Mo-Do had just two errors.
Moultrie-Douglas had 16 base runners and left nine on base. Shelby had 12 base runners and left eight on base.
Shelby's hit crew didn't produce, going 4-for-25. Christian Vonderheide was 0-for-3, Tyler Romack was 0-for-3, Hayden Cole was 0-for-3. Luke McConnell, Dylan Ohnesorge, and Nic Hutchinson were a combined 0-for-4 with two walks.
Zach Monroe was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Gunner Thies was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Tyler Hendryx was 1-for-3 with a run. It just wasn't enough.
Mo-Do went up 3-0 in the 1st and led 4-0 in the 3rd. Shelby finally got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, making it a 4-2 ball game. Hendryx got on and Monroe doubled him home. Thies singled and Monroe scored. Mo-Do added a run in the 6th, while Shelby went 0 for the last four innings.
Shelby Legion (5-13) started the Firecracker with three losses. They were to play Macon County on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Grimes Field.
