The Daily Union Athletes of the Week stepped up this week.
Brandon Helmuth had back-to-back 29-point games, giving the Stew-Stras Comet basketball team a 2-game winning streak. Helmuth scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double against Cowden-Herrick on Friday. He scored 12 times from the field with two treys. He was perfect at the line (3/3). He also added seven steals and five assists.
On Tuesday against South Central, Helmuth scored 29 points again. Once again, he scored 12 times from the floor with one trey. He was near perfect at the line (4/5).
Luke McConnell, a Shelbyville basketball post player, had back-to-back 17-point performances. he had 17 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double against Central A&M on Friday. He also blocked a shot and had a steal. On Tuesday against Monticello, McConnell had 17 points and 13 rebounds for another double-double, plus two blocked shots.
McConnell became the Rams’ leading scorer with 154 points and 132 rebounds. He averages just under a double-double (10.3 ppg/8.8 rpg). He has 11 blocks in 15 games and shoots 60% from the floor.
Tristan Warner Warner of Windsor had a 20-point game, followed by a 28-point game. He scored 20 against Cowden-Herrick. he scored nine times from the floor with one trey. He then scored 28 points against Arcola on Friday. he scored nine times from the floor with a trey hat trick and making 7-of-9 from the line.
Lindsay Burton of the Shelbyville Lady Rams just missed back-to-back double-doubles. She had 13 points and 11 rebounds, with two steals against Maroa. She then had 18 points and eight boards against Tolono with two more steals.
