Comets Swat Hornets

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The last time Stew-Stras (21-15) faced Cowden-Herrick, the Hornets mounted a charge in game 2 and forced the Comets to assert themselves in game 3 to get the win. They met again in the Neoga 1A Regional semifinal on Tuesday and Stew-Stras refused to be challenged, winning in dominant fashion, 25-12, 25-9.

“The girls came out and did their jobs,” said Comet coach Ronda Schlechte. “We played well and everything fell into place.”

Kendall Knop led the Comets to the too-quick, 2-game win by recording a double-double. Knop swung for a team-high 12 kills and led the defense with 11 digs. She also served up two aces. Brittani Tabbert was the other Comet net assassin with nine kills.

Setter Kelsie Walden delivered a team-high five aces and dished out 17 of the 30 team assists, while Baylee Quast contributed nine more assists. The Comets had 30 assists towards the 32 Comet kill total (94%).

The Comets also played solid defense with 27 digs in the quick affair. Stew-Stras served up 10 aces in the match.

Stew-Stras (21-15) was to play Neoga in the Neoga Regional final on Thursday. Stew-Stras hosts the Stew-Stras 2A Sectional on Tuesday.
