W/SS Gets 20th Win

---- — The Windsor/Stew-Stras Co-op juggernaut (21-5) recorded their 20th win last week with a romp over Ramsey, 10-3. On Saturday they finished their regular season with a split over Coal City at Grimes Field, winning 2-1, and losing 6-5.

W/SS pounded out 13 hits and put up a 7-run 3rd to deliver a mortal wound to the Rams. Five W/SS players had multiple hits. Alex Allen was 3-for-4, scoring twice. Christian Vonderheide hit 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two. Hayden Cole was 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs. Justin Fulk was also 2-for-3, while Brandon Helmuth was 2-for-2, with a run scored and an RBI.

Ben Helton threw a 3-hitter over three innings and notched his seventh win against one loss. With a 8-1 lead he took his bow.

An upscale clash of the titans took place at Grimes Field on Saturday, with what was essentially a draw as Windsor/Stew-Stras won game 1 and Coal City won game 2, both 1-run contests.

Christian Vonderheide (7-1) claimed another close win in game 1. He went the first five innings allowing one run on five hits, walked no one, and struck out no one. The W/SS defense did their job holding Coal City in check. Coal City counted coup early with a single run. McLuckie led off, got on, and came around to score.

In the 3rd inning, W/SS did them one run better. Alex Allen got on base and scored. Helmuth scored the other run for the 2-01 lead that would hold up over the next four innings.

In game 2, W/SS had a 2-0 lead in the top of the 3rd, when Coal City erupted for six runs. That put W/SS in a hole, but they started to dig themselves out. In the bottom of the 5th, W/SS got two runs back. In the 6th they made it a 1-run ball game, but they couldn’t pull the trigger in the bottom of the 7th and finished their regular season with a loss.

As Windsor/Stew-Stras heads into the postseason as a regional #1 seed, they boast three .400 hitters and three pitchers with a combined record of 19-4.

Alex Allen leads the hit squad batting .456 with 41 hits, 40 runs, and 20 RBIs. Gunner Theis hit .440 with 33 hits and drew 23 walks to reach base 56 times. He also hit four home runs. Christian Vonderheide hit .410 with 25 hits, 30 runs, and 17 RBIs. He stole 16 bases.

W/SS also had two, almost three, .300 hitters. Hayden Cole hit .329 with 23 hits, 22 RBIs. Brandon Helmuth hit .302 with 13 hits and 11 sacrifice bunts. Trey Leasher hit .299 with 20 hits, 17 RBIs.

Vonderheide, Helton, and White led the dominate pitching staff. Vonderheide finished 7-1 with a microscopic ERA of .088. He recorded 50 Ks in 39 innings. Helton finished 7-2 with an ERA of 2.66 and threw 43 Ks in 44 innings. Aaron White finished 5-1 with a 1.21 ERA and struck out 40 batters in 40 innings.

W/SS (#1) plays the winner of the Beecher City/Ramsey game on Wednesday at the Central A&M Class A Regional.
