---- — The Daily Union Athletes of the Week did their thing in the field, the field events of track.

Darin Breeden, Shelbyville senior, won two high jump competitions in two big meets in less than a week. State medalist Jason Fry of Stew-Stras, the Bi-County champ in the shot and discus, took runner-up honors at the Shelby Boys Open.

Breeden is a dual sports athlete with tennis and plays #2 singles and #2 doubles for the Rams. Breeden helped the Rams sweep Southeast a week ago, 9-0, by winning both singles, 6-2, 6-3, then doubles with Adam Hudson, 6-0, 6-0.

On Monday at the Okaw Valley Conference Meet, Breeden battled in the high jump and won his second straight OVC high jump title, going 6-2. On Saturday, Breeden competed at the Shelby Boys Open and had another battle on his hands. However, he prevailed to win, clearing 6-0.

Jason Fry recently won the Bi-County title in the shot put and the discus. Fry threw 48-03 in the shot put, and threw 160-05 in the discus. On Saturday at the Shelby Open, Fry was up against world-beater Ryan Pierce of Villa Grove. Pierce won both events, as expected.

Fry beat the rest of the field to claim 2nd in both events. He threw 50-01 in the shot and 156-8 in the discus, losing to Pierce by just an inch.
