Shelby turns tables on Tuscola

Tuscola tumbled Shelbyville recently, 13-5. But on Tuesday in the first round of the Tuscola Regional, Shelbyville turned the tables, eliminating Tuscola, 6-2.

In the last couple weeks, Shelbyville softball has struggled to score and had battery issues due to injuries at catcher. Tuscola took advantage of that and beat then Rams. That was then. Shelbyville put together consecutive 3-run innings at regional and held on to win, 6-2.

Shelby only out-hit Tuscola 5 to 4, but Tuscola booted the ball four times and the Rams just once. Both pitchers walked four. The Rams had 13 base runners to Tuscola’s nine. Shelby capitalized and got almost half of them home. Tuscola fell short of that.

Kayla Brachbill and Rachel Fox led the Ram hitters. Brachbill drove in two of their six runs and Fox smacked a double.

Shelby got started in the 3rd. Fox led off with a double and, with one out, Lindsey Eigsti walked and stole 2nd. Brachbill singled in both runners. Moll reached on an error and Brachbill scored.

In the 4th, Tuscola got a run to make it 3-1 Rams. A walk, a hit batter, a walk and an error scored the run. Brandy Smith walked to lead off and Abbie Watton was hit by a pitch. Fox singled to load the bases. Mackenize Durbin grounded out and drove in a run. With two outs, Jensen Cloe reached on an error and runs scored for a 6-1 lead.

Tuscola got another run in the 7th with a single and four passed balls.

Grace Moll was in command in the circle. Moll threw a complete game, striking out 13 batters in seven innings, walking just four.

Walker pitched good for Tuscola, despite the loss. She went the distance with 10 Ks and four walks.
