Shelby Tennis Wins Again

The Shelbyvile Lady Ram Tennis team won their 5th match of the season on Thursday, knocking off Newton, 5-4.

"The girls played well," said Ram coach Ryan Scott.

Shelbyville won three of the six singles matches, so it would come down to doubles to determine the winner, Shelbyville or Newton. That's where Shelby had a leg up.

The #1 Ram doubles team of Mykennah Allen and Alexis Halbrook, two former Daily Union Athletes of the Week, have not lost a doubles match since they placed 5th at the Mattoon Invite and put themselves on the map. On Thursday Allen and Halbrook made it six straight, beating Newton's #1 team, 10-6.

Kayla Lee and Taylor Powers have also been on a bit of a run lately, especially in singles. Lee won #2 singles against Newton, 7-5, 6-4. Powers went three sets in #5 singles, before losing, 6-3, 3-6, 6-10.

The two combined for #3 doubles. With the team score 4-4, it would be the deciding match. Lee and Powers won, going away, 10-3.

Alexis Halbrook followed Lee's example in singles with a #4 singles win, scalding Shelby Jackson, 6-1, 6-3. Julia Bolinger (#6 singles) also had an important win that kept Shelby in the hunt. Bolinger won 6-0, 6-2.

Shelbyville hosts Teutopolis on Monday at 4:30 p.m., then is scheduled for a rematch with Newton on Thursday.
