Stew-Stras/Windsor junior high girls basketball had their second split in a row to start the season. SS/W 7th won again, beating Brownstown/St. Elmo, 19-16. SS/W 8thy lost again, getting beat by Brownstown/St. Elmo, 45-26.
Megan Schlechte scored 13 of the SS/W points to lead them to the comeback, 3-point win. SS/W and B/St E were tied 4-4 after the slow 1st period. B/St E then had an 8-3 run in the 2nd to take what could be a formidable lead in the low scoring game.
The 3rd was awash and the decisison went to the 4th period. Down 16-11 with 6:00 to play, SS/W clamped down the defense and put it in passing gear for an 8-0 run and the win.
Katrina Davis followed Schlechte in scoring with five points, including SS/W's first 3-pointer of the season. That 3-pointer and SS/W free throws were factors in the win.
In the 8th grade game, Brownstown/St. Elmo was on fire early, taking the period, 12-5. Ditto in the 2nd, B/St E had a 13-5 run and led by 15 points at the break, 25-10. The 3rd period was more of the same as B/St E extended their lead to 20 points, 36-16.
SS/W hadn't broke into double figures in the first three quarters. They finally did in the 4th, but could only trim the 20-point lead by a point.
Dana Shelton led the game with 17 points for B/St E. Madison Everett did her part for SS/W, scoring 16 points. However, Viramontes and Deanna Shelton scored 13 and 7 points, respectively, for B/St E.
SS/W couldn't match that. Two 7th graders, Davis and Schlechte, played up and scored four and three points, respectively. Smith added three more points, but that was all they could muster.
SS/W 7th (2-0) and 8th (0-2) were to play host to Altamont on Friday.
