Okaw Wins State 1st Round

Okaw Valley Middle School baseball had a 9-0 win at the Raymond Sectional last Saturday and advanced to the IESA Class A State Baseball Tournament today. This morning, Okaw Valley (19-1) took on Normal Epiphany (19-4) and earned the 1st round win, 6-1.

Okaw Valley will play Saturday at 9:30 the State semifinal round against the winner of Springfield Blessed Sacrament (14-4) and Joliet St. Paul (11-5)

Okaw Valley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half inning on Cody Drake's grand slam home run. They added a run in the 3rd and the 5th to lead 6-0.

Starting pitcher Garrett Fritz held Epiphany scoreless through the first four innings, before giving up a single run in the 5th. Fritz went the distance, seven innings. He allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

Of course, the hitting star of the game was Drake. Drake went 2-for-3 with the grand slam. Seven Okaw batters hit safely. Fritz also had two hits. jarden Bunfille was 1-for-2, but drove in the other two Okaw runs.

Okaw cranked out nine hits and reached base on three Epiphany errors and five walks. Okaw batters only struck out once in seven innings.
