SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelbyville Rams earned their 2nd straight Top 5 team finish at the 2013 IHSA Class A State Cross Country Meet in Peoria on Saturday.

That was the second best finish of any Shelbyville team in school history. The Ram team time of 1:20.34 was also the second fastest of any Shelbyville team. Both top marks were set by last years 3rd place Shelbyville state team.

The Rams were led by senior Drennian Martin who placed 15th individually in a time of 15:34 to earn all-state honors. Martins time also put him in 4th place on the all-time Shelbyville list for runners at the state course.

Shelbyville was beaten by just three teams, Elmwood, Winnebago, and Monticello. Martin, the Ram #1 finisher, beat the #1 finishers from each of those three teams. He was 4 seconds ahead of Monticello's #1, six seconds ahead of Elmwood's #1, and nine seconds ahead of Winnebago's #1.

"Drennian just ran a great race," said Ram coach Kevin Kramer. "He really came through just like he always does in big races. I am very proud of Drennian in his leadership and what he has been able to accomplish this year. We couldn't have done it without him. I challenged all the runners today to give me their besit and then when they had done that to race even harder. Drennian did just that. He gave everything he had on course."

Sophomore Marcus Skinner was next in for the Rams with a time of 16:00 for 40th place.

"Marcus didn't have his best race, but I thought he still ran very well," Coach Kramer said. "He has had a great season this year and was a big reason for our success this year."

Junior Kenton Martin ran a 16:10 for 52nd place.

"Kenton just ran an outstanding race, his best of the year," Coach Kramer said. "He ran hard and was passing kids the whole race today. I hope this propels him into next year, because we will need his leadership as a senior next season."

Senior Jaden Stockdale, who has been battling an injury the last two weeks ran a 16:15 to finish in 65th position.

"Jaden ran like a warrior today," Coach Kramer said. "He was hurting for most of the race, but would not give in. He could have easily dropped off and cruised in to the finish. But that is not Jaden Stockdale. Jaden is one of the gutsiest runners I have ever coached."

Freshman Tyler Pasley was the Rams' fifth runner in 112th place (16:46).

"Tyler didn't run terrible today, but I think he would be the first to tell you that he could have run better," Coach Kramer said. "I just think he was a little overwhelmed today and was not focused on his race plan. But, he will learn and be better for it in the future. Tyler has done a great job as our #5 this year and has a bright future."

Freshman Hunter Plummer placed 139th in 17:07.

"Hunter ran his best race of his young career, as he just keeps getting better every meet," Coach Kramer said. "Considering he came out at beginning of season with no summer work and he lost a couple of weeks with injury, he has done a great job. The sky is the limit for Hunter if he is willing to work for it."

Sophomore Preston Henze was 7th man for Rams, placing 157th with a time of 17:21.
"Preston has had trouble off and on with a breathing issue and it was bothering him," Coach Kramer said. "We are going to have to see if we can get it figured out because when he is not hurting he really can do things."

The Top 5 Ram scorers pack wasn't as good as sectional, but they still were just 1:12 apart from the 1st to the 5th scorer.

"I am just so proud of this team and what they were able to accomplish this year," Coach Kramer said. "Losing as many kids as we did last year, to finish this high is amazing. And we have a five of seven coming back, so the table is set for success next season. We will see if they are up to it and work as hard as there teammates the last two years."

"I want to thank all the parents for their support and help at meets this year," Coach Kraemr said. "We have the best parent group out there and it is a key to our success."
