Shelbyville Moulton baseball has started 3-0 with dominant pitching. They won at Clinton on Saturday in A and B games, 10-0 and 7-0. They won Monday at St. Anthony, 11-0. Tuesday they opened at home and beat Maroa, 7-1. They tied the B game, 4-4.
They won Saturday behind a 1-hitter and a no-hitter. They won Monday behind another 1-hitter. On Tuesday in the A game, Turner Pullen and Quinn Martz combined to allow just one run and three hits over seven innings, while throwing nine strikeouts.
The Rams also cranked out 10 hits in the A game on Saturday, 12 hits on Monday, and scored seven runs on six hits on Tuesday. They put the ball in play on Tuesday and reached five more times on errors. Add three walks and the Rams had a total of 14 base runners.
On Monday, Payton Howell threw a 1-hit shutout, with no walks and six strikeouts in five innings. St. Anthony recently beat Stew-Stras/Windsor, 10-5. However, St. Anthony couldn’t get any traction against Moulton.
Mason Cameron, Pullen, and Howell singled in the 1st. Cameron stole 2nd and home and Pullen stole home for a 2-0 lead. Martz drew a lead off walk in the 2nd, advanced on a ground out and Spears singled. Martz scored, 3-0 Rams. Howell rang up three batters in two innings.
Shelby rallied in the 3rd. Tylr Gottfriedt led off with a single and Pullen singled him home. Watson singled and, with two outs, Miller hit a 2-run double. Spears followed with an RBI double, 7-0 Rams. Howell KO’d another batter. Gottfriedt led off the 4th with a triple and Pullen launched a sac fly to center. Howell had two more strikeouts.
Up 8-0 in the 5th, the Rams put the early dismissal into play. Martz led off reaching on an error, Miller singled, and Spears hit a 2-run single, 10-0 Rams. Summers grounded out, but scored Spears, 11-0. In the bottom of the 5th, the Rams put the Bulldogs down, making plays. Cameron threw out a batter, Watson made a 3-unassisted play at 1st, and Pullen squeezed a pop fly to end the game.
Seven different Rams tallied their 12 hits, led by the #3 and #4 hitters, but also the #8 and #9 hitters. Gottfriedt was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice. Pullen was 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two. Miller, batting 8th, was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Spears, batting 9th, hit 3-for-3 with a double, a run, and led the team with three RBIs.

On Tuesday, Shelby went 2-0 in the conference by handling Maroa, 7-1. The Rams were not as proficient, offensively or pitching. Shelby pitchers gave up five walks in seven innings and hit three batters, but it didn’t seem to hurt them, except for one run.
Spears caught a fly ball to open the Maroa 1st, then pitcher Turner Pullen threw a batter out at 1st from his knees. After a walk, Pullen rang up the next batter to end the at bat with a runner on 3rd.
Shelby got on the board first in the 1st. Cameron drew a lead off walk. Gottfriedt reached on a error in right. Cameron went to 3rd and Pullen crushed a ball deep into center field that was caught. Cameron tagged and scored, 1-0. Pullen threw two more Ks in the 2nd.
Shelby got another run in the 2nd. With one out, Martz reached on an error. Miller followed with a single and both runners stole the next base. With two outs, Cameron reached on an error, scoring Martz, 2-0 Rams.
Maroa got traction in the 3rd, put only managed one run. The opposing pitcher hit an RBI single to make it a 1-run game, 2-1. A walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Pullen bowed his back and rang up the next batter to end the threat and keep the lead.
Neither team scored in their next at bat. Pullen threw two more strikeouts, while the Rams all hit the ball in the 3rd, just at people. Shelby then pushed their lead to two runs in the 4th. Watson drew a lead-off walk. Martz sac-bunted him into scoring position. Miller’s ground out moved Watson to 3rd and Spears singled him home, 3-1 Rams.
Martz came on in relief in the scoreless Maroa 5th.In the bottom of the 5th, Shelby got meaningful separation with two outs. Pullen was hit by a pitch and Howell singled. Watson singled and drove in a run, 4-1. Martz doubled a run in and Miller reached on an error, sending a run across, 6-1. Spears singled again and the Ram lead swelled to 7-1. Martz gave up a 2-out hit in the 6th, but finished the inning with a K. Martz closed out Maroa in the 7th with two strikeouts.
Spears led the Rams in hitting, going 2-for-3 with another RBI, while four others hit safely. Howell singled and scored. Watson singled, scored twice, and had an RBI. Martz doubled, reached on an error, sac bunted, scored twice and drove in a run. Miller singled, reached on an error and drove in a run.
Moulton (3-0, 2-0 Okaw) plays Thursday, hosting Warrensburg at 4 p.m.
