---- — Lincoln brought the lumber to the Sr. Legion baseball playoffs at Mattoon and ended Shelby County’s season, 13-7.
Shelby didn’t play bad, in fact after a big deficit, Shelby tied the game with a grand slam. Shelby maximized their nine hits by scoring seven times. Shelby left only seven men on base in nine innings. Shelby pitchers gave up just three walks and one hit batter. Lincoln just hammered the Shelby pitching.
Lincoln logged 21 hits including 17 singles, three doubles and a home run.
Lincoln had two hits to start the game, but Shelby turned a 6-4-3 double play, Vonderheide to Keown to Hawkins, to stop the rally. Jake Keown doubled in the 1st, but was left on.
Lincoln rattled the bats in the 2nd. The first three batters singled, for a 1-0 lead, then came a bunt single. A fielder’s choice got the first out at home, then Shelby starter Ben Helton rang up the lead-off man.
With the bases loaded and two outs, a hit batter and a walk, made it 3-0. A 3-run double dug the hole deeper, 6-0 Lincoln.
Hayden Cole walked and Tyler Hendryx singled in the Shelby 2nd. Cole was stranded at 3rd. In the Lincoln 3rd, two more hits and an error loaded the bases with two outs. Hayden Cole made two plays from 3rd and helped keep Shelby in the game.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Keown led off drawing a walk. Two outs later, Mike Baker singled and Cole smacked a 2-run double. Two errors allowed Cole to score to cut the lead in half, 6-3.
The 4th was scoreless, then Lincoln got a run in the 5th. A bunt single, another double, and a sac fly made it, 7-3. After three scoreless innings, Shelby County got it going in the 7th.
Hendryx led off with a walk and Vonderheide cranked a double. Keown walked to load the bases. Gunner Theis then hit a 2-0 pitch over the fence for a game-tying grand slam, 7-7.
Luke Hatfield then hammered a double and knocked the starting pitcher out of the game. The first five batters of the inning reached base and four scored. A ground out, a fielder’s choice and a K cooled the rally.
At the start of the 8th, it was a new game, 7-7. Lincoln won the final two innings and the game.
A Lincoln ground out in the 8th was followed by a single and a walk. A Lincoln 3-run blast goosed them into the lead, 10-7. The dam had broken. Three straight singles, scoring two more runs, were followed by a bunt and another single, capping the 5-run, 7-hit inning.
Aaron White came in to pitch in the midst of the 8th inning rally down 11-7. He gave up a bunt single and another hit, but got two of the outs in the 8th. He threw two strikeouts in the 9th and threw out the last batter from the mound, after giving up one run.
Shelby went in order in the 8th and 9th and just faded away.
