Cowden-Herrick Jr. High basketball traveled to St. Elmo Brownstown on Thursday, and the two programs split. The 7th Grade Hornets beat the 7th Grade Eagles, 36-35. The 8th Grade Hornets lost to the 8th Grade Eagles, 23-43.
In the 7th grade Hornet win, Coltin Rauch got the the line early and Blaze ruessell connected from the field. Rauch made 2-of-4 free throws and then had a two. Russell scored three 2-pointers. Hunter Watson added a deuce and the Hornets were off to a quick double-digit start in the first 6:00.
The game was on in the middle quarters. Ruach was able to score twice in the 2nd, Zach Dilley hit a two, and Brody Phillips rang up the first of his troika of treys, giving the Hornets 21 1st half points.
Rauch was fouled in the 3rd and made 1-of-2 foul shots and a deuce. Then Phillips buried two more triples to keep the Hornets on track. They had 30 points heading into the 4th.
However, St. Elmo clamped down on the Hornets in crunch time. Rauch was the only Hornet to score in th final 6:00. He made three shots and it was just enough to eke out the win by a point.
