CHBC Opens Season With Another Win

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City basketball started the first season in four years without all-stater Micah Jones, but that didn't keep them from opening the season with another double-digit win. The Hornets screwed down their defense and beat host South Central, 39-26.

The Hornets, who had three state appearances in four years and came home last year with a state-runner-up trophy, were without graduates Micah Jones, Ava Paruleski, and Autumn Riley.

The Hornets were still tough to score on and showed balanced in their own scoring.

The Hornets, known for their swarming defense, put it on South Central out of the gate with a 14-2 run. That cushion held up better than a My Pillow, for the 13-point win.

Sout6h Central recovered, but still fell back by 14 at the break, 22-8. The Cougars won the 3rd, but just by a point and still trailed by double-digits, 30-17. Down the stretch, South Central neede a run and didn't get it. CHBC matched the South Central effort and held them off for the win.

CHBC was led by Kirby Herrmann with 10 points and seven boards, followed by Ashley Miller with nine pointsand two steals. Chandler Ward led the team with nine rebounds and Jensyn Morrison dished a team-high four assists.

CHBC did commit 13 turnovers and missed 10-of-15 free throws, despite the win.
