SHELBYVILLE, IL. — After a lack-luster loss to Okaw Valley to open the season, Shelby got traction at Brownstown, despite another loss, 58-51.
Madison Boone put the team on her shoulders in their first game with 13 points, 13 boards. In this game, senior Lindsay Burton was back on the floor.
Burton had been injured during Stew-Stras' state runner-up volleyball season. She also missed basketball practices due to the state appearance. She announced her senior season with a game-high 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Boone was her tag-team partner scoring 15 points with 9 boards. Olivia Williamson got going and was the third Ram in double figures, scoring 12 points with one trey, grabbing eight rebounds. Guard Courtney Schultz also connected for eight points, six in the 4th quarter race for the tape.
Burton, Boone and Williamson got on the board in the 1st. Burton and Boone had two buckets and a free throw each, while Williamson had a two.
However, Brownstown had six early scorers. Oberlink also had two buckets and a throw, aided by Fitch with a two and a three. Hill converted a 3-point play, while Pruett, Moore, and Bone had solo tows for a 19-12 lead.
Burton, Boone, and Williamson scored again in the 2nd. Boone scored twice and made 2-of-3 free throws. Burton had a deuce and 1-of-2 free throws. WIlliamson and Schultz had solo baskets.
Shelby still couldn't stop B/St. E. Hill scored a two and converted another 3-point play. Brown hit a trey, Fitch had two scores and Austin had a deuce for 14 points, extending B/St. E's lead to eight points at the break, 33-25.
Shelby only scored 31 points in their first game, so they were already putting a lot more offense just in the first half. The 3rd was a lockdown defensive period.
Williamsom led Shelby with a triple and 1-of-2 foul shots, but Burton and Boone had just one bucket each. Brownstown also had a solo trey from Brown, a Bone two, and Austin two and Oberlink making both her foul shots, for a 9-point lead, 42-33.
The Rams would have to make a push in the 4th and they did. Shelby hit eight shots in crunch time. Williamson had two, Burton had two and a pair of free throws, for six of her 16 in the 4th. Boone scored and Schultz connected on a triply of twos.
The Rams finally stymied the B/St. E floor game down the stretch. They held them to three buckets. However, Brownstown beat Shelby at the line. Fitch made 4-of-6 foul shots, Hill made 5-of-6 and Moore 1-of-2. Their foul shooting allowed them to hold on to the lead in the face of the Ram push.
B/St. E shot 14 free throws in the 4th and made 10 (72%). Shelby shot nine free throws late and made just two (22%). The Rams missed 15 foul shots in a 7-point loss.
Shelby had 18 turnovers in the loss, but just one assist and four steals. Shelby did grab 42 rebounds.
