CHBC 10-0 Run Rates NTC Title

Jones Named MVP

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — CHBC used a 10-0 run in the 4th quarter to beat St. Anthony in the NTC Girls Tourney Championship game on Saturday, 36-31.

CHBC had come from 10-points down in the 3rd period to survive Dieterich in the semifinal, Friday. They came back from five down in the 4th to beat St. Anthony on Saturday in the championship.

CHBC's leading scorer Micah Jones was held to just seven points through three quarters thanks to double and triple teams and a lot of long St. Anthony arms.

So the Hornet's had to rely on defense and senior forward Autum Riley to carry them offensively with six of her 8 points in the 1st period.

Junior Kirby Herrmann also scored all four of her points early to keep the Hornets in the game. Ava Paruleski scored and Jones and Ashley Miller split a pair of free throws to give the Hornets a 14-13 lead after one.

The 1st quarter had three lead changes and four ties. The biggest lead was a 3-point lead by CHBC, but with 8 seconds left, Makayla Walsh hit a two at the buzzer to cut it to a 1-point Hornet lead, 14-13.

Jones converted a 3-point play early in the 2nd, before St. Anthony went on a 6-0 run and carried a 19-18 lead into the half.

Jones dished to Riley inside for two and put CHBC up one with 4:17 in the 3rd, 24-23. CHBC's Ashley Miller grabbed a blocked shot out of the air and threw the ball up while falling to the floor. It rimmed around and fell through for a 26-25 lead.

The Bulldogs had another run in them. They finished the 3rd with a 6-0 run and the Hornets were in a hole to start the 4th.

Jones drove with 6:16 to play in the game and was fouled. She made both shots, 31-28 Bulldogs. Kacie Hilt forced a tie-up at the Bulldog end and got CHBC the ball.
