Illinois State Police Travel Advisory

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

The Following Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police Pesotum, District 10

Pesotum 1-31-14, Illinois State Police District 10 officials are reminding motorists of the potentially dangerous road conditions as Winter Storm Maximus approaches Illinois. The roadways in District 10 have the potential to become snow and ice covered. District 10 Counties include Champaign, Douglas, Coles, Vermilion, Edgar, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and Macon. Many of those counties will be under a Winter Storm Watch beginning tonight, January 31, 2014 at 9:00 pm until February 1, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

Motorists should use caution, reduce speed, and allow for extra travel time. Motorists are also reminded to have an emergency kit in their vehicle. Illinois State Police District 10 would like to remind drivers of the following driving tips for inclement weather: 1) only use cruise control on dry surfaces, 2) if you lose traction gradually slow down, do not slam on the brakes, 3) use caution when driving on bridges and ramps, frost forms on these surfaces first, 4) be careful when approaching shaded areas, this is the last place for ice and snow to melt. Stranded motorists are encouraged to remain inside their vehicles.

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when approaching stationary authorized emergency vehicles with their lights activated on the roadways. Authorized emergency vehicles include police, fire, EMS, and other emergency vehicles. It is the law to proceed with due caution, change lanes if possible, and reduce your speed. Move over and slow down. Also use caution when traveling near snow removal trucks and snow plows.

A complete list of road closures can be found on the Illinois Department of Transportation website www.illinoisroads.info and www.gettingaroundillinois.com or 1-800-452-4368.
