School board nixes press box expansion request

The Shelbyville School Board began its regular meeting Thursday evening with kudos to the local committee who worked to educate the community on the sale tax referendum, which passed in Tuesday’s primary election.

They also commended the committees throughout the county who worked from the perspective of their school districts.

“It was one big team effort,” said board member Scott West.

But with the voice of the sales tax opposition in mind, the board turned down the request for a press box expansion.

The press box was damaged when the roof was torn off during the February wind storm. The insurance would pay for the cost of repairs.

Athletic director Tony Pullen requested a 20 x 18 expansion of the box to provide more room for reporters, announcer, scoreboard operators, videographers, and staff, as well as provided needed storage space.

“It would be cheaper to do it now than later. The estimated cost for the expansion is $24,000,” said Superintendent Denise Bence. “We could use the extra money budgeted from the roof project.”

Board member Ellen Trainor voiced a hesitation in approving the project.

“I’m worried about the public perception. We will appear to do exactly what they (the opposition) said we were going to do,” Trainor said. “There are other issues that the savings could be targeted for.”

“I agree the timing’s not good,” Bence said. “It sends a message out there true or untrue. But at the same time the timing is good for construction costs.”

In other business the board approved:

-- the policy updates as presented, which include prohibiting of concealed carry weapons on school property and the use or possession of medical marijuana on school property.

-- the 2014-2015 calendar which begins August 20 for students and ends June 2 if all emergency days are used and Casmir Pulaski Day holiday is eliminated.
