District seeks vote on tax hike

The Shelbyville School District is looking to ask voters for a third time to agree to a county wide sales tax increase which will also benefit other school districts in the county.

“To be able to install a new HVAC (heating /ventilation/ air conditioning) at the high school we have to pass the sales tax referendum,” said superintendent Denise Bence.

She noted that there have been four interrupted days due to the heat this year. Interrupted days mean that the decision was made after the school day was underway. Other heat days were called ahead of the start of the school day.

She added that she is meeting with the nine superintendents that would benefit from the county wide tax and said she believes she has the numbers to put the referendum on the March ballot. She also encouraged the school board to start get bids now for the project before putting it on the ballot to be ready to sign the contracts once the referendum passed.

This would allow work to begin as soon as the school year was over.

“If we wait another year, things will only get more expensive,” Bence said.

The board gave approval to begin taking bids for the project.

The board also heard a summary by Bruce Combs of Johnson Controls about the work done at Moulton Middle School last summer which included drilling 69 wells, installing 56 heating and cooling units with digital controls and sensors, and replacing 122 windows.

“The advantages are it adds cooling to the building for student comfort, it is digitally controlled, and it is a green project designed with expansion in mind,” Combs said.

In other business, following the budget hearing, the board adopted the 2014 budget for the district with the adjustment of an estimated $50,000 reduction in the $1.1 million deficit spending.

“The budget figures in 88.7 percent proration in state aid to the education fund,” Bence said.

The board also approved the bid from Bendsen Signs and Graphic Inc. for repair work on the district’s electronic sign. The sign is located on Moulton Middle School property at the corner of North Sixth and Route 128 North.
