Whenever the American flag becomes worn and tattered, it should be retired in a respectable manner.
The Shelbyville VFW Post and American Legion held a flag disposal ceremony Friday evening in which about 250 flags were presented for retirement by burning. The ceremony was held at the Walden park field on South Cedar Street.
The VFW Men’s Auxiliary and members of Boy Scout Troop 51 assisted in the burning of the retired flags. The Shelby County Honor Guard presented the colors and played “To the Colors” as the first flags were burned.
This is the fourth year of the ceremony presided by the joint effort of the two veterans’ organizations.
The ashes were buried in Soldiers’ field in Glenwood Cemetery Saturday morning. Soldiers’ Field is located on Veterans Avenue in an area where veterans from various wars - Blackhawk War to World War II - are buried.
