Shooting in Bethany leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — UPDATED: One person is dead and another injured in an apparent shooting in Bethany Thursday.

In a press release from the Illinois State Police:

Bethany, IL- On July 4, 2013, the Coles County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call from a rural Bethany resident. The male caller advised he had been shot and requested assistance. The Illinois State Police District 10, the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Department and the Sullivan Police Department responded to the scene. Upon their arrival and preliminary investigation, officers located two subjects at the residence who had been shot. The Moultrie County Sheriff’s Department contacted the Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations requesting assistance.

Both subjects were transported to area hospitals where Denise Robertson, age 51, of rural Bethany, was pronounced deceased by the Macon County Coroner. Michael Robertson, age 66, of rural Bethany was airlifted to an area trauma center where he is currently undergoing treatment.

An autopsy was performed on July 5, 2013 at the McLean County Coroner’s office. Preliminary cause of death is a single gunshot wound to the head.

The investigation is pending and no further information will be released by the Illinois State Police at this time.

The public is reminded that crimals defendants are presumed innocent until the government is able to prove its charess in court beyond a reasonable doubt.
