Shelby School Board hears of facility needs

Parts of Shelbyville High School is in need of new roofing.

This was the report given by Superintendent Denise Bence at Thursday’s school board meeting.

Bence told the board that an infrared scan of the Kindergarten, gym, and auditorium sections of the building revealed the deficiency in the roofing on the gym and auditorium. The Kindergarten section was fine for now.

“There is no rubber roof on the gym,” Bence said. “But we won’t be doing anything about it until next summer. It will be put into the budget.”

Bence also noted that the tennis courts were in need of resurfacing and that funds were being sought for the project.

“We looked into the city’s TIF funds and found they could only be used for building rehabilitation, employee training, and equipment. It could not be used for the tennis courts,” Bence said.

Bence presented a bid from Cutting Edge Asphalt for $14,796 with a resurfacing kit.

The board approved the contract with Shelby Memorial Hospital for an athletic trainer for the 2013-2014 school year.

Following executive session, the board:

- Accepted the resignations of High School math teacher Courtney Mills and part time elementary art teacher Mary Brooks.

- Approved the following coaching positions: volunteer assistant gold coaches Bill Leach and Jordan Ziegenbein, volunteer assistant cross country coach Chris Mosley, and volunteer assistant Jr. High softball coach Mike Holland.
