Cowden Pioneer Days offers something for whole family

Cowden Pioneer Days will offer a variety of events and activities for the whole family.

The festival will be held from Friday, August 23 through Sunday, August 25

According to Barb Sarver, entertainment coordinator, this year will hold new attractions for the people of Central Illinois.

“This year we have a mechanical bull, a bungee run, a new run/walk course and the Backyard Barbeque Cook-Off,” Sarver said.

She said the cook-off on Saturday will have two different categories, chicken and pork ribs.

“There is a $35 registration fee for each team and registration will be from 10 to 11 a.m.,” Sarver said.

Prizes range from $25 to $250.

Each night of the festival will host live entertainment from local and visiting bands.

According to Sarver, one of the acts has sparked quite a lot of interest in the community.

“The Blend Quartet is an a capella group does ‘50s and ‘60s music,” Sarver said. “A lot of people are talking about them.”

Aspiring singers will also take the stage at Cowden Pioneer days on Saturday night when the Texaco Country Showdown hosts talents from across the country.

Sarver said the acts range from singers to bands.

“They compete across the country and come here to compete in the finals,” Sarver said.

Aside from entertainment, the festival will host a 5K Run/Walk in memory of Jim Edmundson, a former teacher and track coach.

The event will take place on a new course this year.

Sarver said the rodeo will take place Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m.

“After the rodeo on Saturday night, Crazy Horse will play,” Sarver said.

Sarver said the festival is sure to bring people home to reunite and enjoy the attractions.

“I hope everyone comes out and enjoys themselves!” Sarver said.
