New year school calendar approved

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

In a brief meeting Thursday, the Shelbyville School Board approved the school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year.

The new school year will begin with teacher workshops August 19 and 20 and the first day of attendance August 21. The ending date is June 2 if all six emergency days are used.

”The State mandates that there be five hours of attendance both the first and last day of school,” Superintendent Denise Bence told the board.

The board also approved the revised Board Policy manual.

In administrative reports, Bence reported that the district has received a grant for one boiler.

”We are slowly working on getting grants for boilers and pipes,” she said.

She reported that the office has applied for about $100,000 in rebates on the Moulton Middle School project.

Bence reported that state aid is being pro-rationed at 82 percent and the transportation reimbursement is being pro-rationed at 19 percent.

She also reported that the Pathways program, a credit recovery program, needs to relocate due to lease increase at its present location in the basement of the Shelbyville Post Office. Bence noted that one of the portable classrooms will be available for the programs use next year, saving the district money on the lease.

Building principals thanked various community businesses and organization who have made donations and aided in various activities.

Moulton principal Russ Tomblin reported that the recent dodgeball tournament, sponsored by the PTO, raised $4585. Donations were made by faculty members, Wade’s Quality Meats, and Joe’s Pizza.

Snacks and cups were donated by parents, McDonald’s, and Dairy Queen during ISAT testing earlier this month.

Main Street principal Shannon Shallenberger reported that Shelby Memorial Hospital donated $500 for health related non-fiction books. She added that Reading coordinator Pam Green has been active in choosing the books.

The Box Top competition raised over $3200 and was able to purchase  five iPads, one for each grade level pre-K through third grade.

Following the executive session, the board accepted resignation from Mike Steers as varsity basketball coach, teachers Dawn Hoene and Becky Fedrigon at the end of the 2016-2017 school year, Emma Burrows as band director at the end of the current year, and Brittany Pierce as 7th grade teacher and assistant high school volleyball coach.

The board also approved a two-year contract for Tony Pulen and Russ Tomblin.
