Fire destroys Lakewood home

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

Only ashes remain of an unoccupied two-story house that burned in Lakewood Saturday.

Cowden Fire Chief Trent Buchanan said his department was notified of the fire around 3 p.m. and the structure was fully engulfed when they arrived on the scene. He requested mutual aid from Herrick, Tower Hill, and Shelbyville who arrived with pumpers and tankers.

The crews remained on the scene into the night and the arrival of the State Fire Marshall. Because the house was unoccupied, Buchanan said the fire is "suspicious" in origin.

There were no injuries, however a neighboring home suffered melted siding and cracked windows from the heat of the fire.

No report from the Fire Marshall was available at press time.
