The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued vaccine recommendations for the use of pneumococcal vaccines. On August 13, 2014, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend that adults 65 years and older be vaccinated with 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV 13, Prevnar-13). The 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23, Pneumovax) continues to be recommended for adults 65 years of age and older.
Adults age 65 years and older who have not previously received pneumococcal vaccine should receive one dose of Prevnar-13, followed by a dose of PPSV23. The dose of PPSV23 should be given 12 months after a dose of PCV13.
Adults age 65 years and older who have previously received PPSV23 also should receive a dose of Prevnar-13 if they have not received it. A dose of Prevnar-13 should be given anytime after a year of the most recent dose of PPSV23.
Prevnar-13 is available at the Shelby County Health Department. Walk-in administration is available Monday- Friday 8-12 and 1-4. For more information, please call the
