(Red-letter portions of the New Testament)
John 5:39-40, “You study the Scriptures diligently, because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”
Do we just want the goodies, or do we want the one who gives them, Jesus?
People are curious about religion because they think that in religion they may discover life after death. Those devoted to religion, even Christianity, may diligently study the scriptures to discover eternal life. However, many want the benefit, not the source, Jesus.
The majority of people that search the scriptures are looking for an answer, looking to have their itch scratched, looking for something they can get for themselves. They look for direction for their life. They look for success in life. They for look material blessings and familial happiness. They want their need met, whatever it is, however, they don’t want Jesus.
Jesus didn’t come just to answer our theological questions, to make our lives better, or just to make us nicer sinners. He wants a relationship with us. He loves us and wants us to love him back. If we don’t want him, why would he give us eternal life, just so we can continue to ignore him for eternity?
The scriptures don’t just have answers to life and eternal life, they testify about Jesus, so we can believe in him, get to know him and love him. Jesus says on the last day some people will come to him and expect eternal life, but he will say, “Depart from me, I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23)
Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6). There is no eternal life without Jesus. Jesus said “This is eternal life, that they may know the one true God and Jesus Christ, the one God sent.” (John 17:3). “He who has the Son has life. He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:12).
Search the scriptures for Jesus, believe in him, know him, love him, and find life, even eternal life, in the process.
