(Red-letter portions of the New Testament)

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus knows that we can become weary and heavy laden in life. We try to keep up with the demanding pace of modern society. Work, school, community involvement, finances, relationships, health, extra-curricular activities. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak and stress wears us out.

That’s where Jesus comes in. When we come to him he will give us rest. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul.”

Jesus does offer rest. But he offers so much more than 5 minutes of peace only so we can jump right back on the tread mill.

Jesus says to take his yoke upon our shoulders. That may not sound restful, but his yoke is not an added heavy burden on us. Its like power steering when you are used to manual.

When we step into the yoke with Jesus, he provides the power. As we take his yoke and learn from him, everything becomes easier, because he provides the power and we learn how to use it.

The way we learn how to use it is by letting him steer. If we let him guide us, we not only find rest, but direction. Instead of running the tread mill of life we have put ourselves on, we learn to live our life according to his purposes. That’s where we find the Best Life and the rest for our souls.
