American Legion Auxiliary Liberty Unit 289 Vice President Bonnie Lawrence called to order the May 14 meeting.
Those in attendance sang taps. Roll call was taken with five officers present.
Linda Oakley and Cinda Held delivered 95 quilts to the Bloomington Department Office. The unit will receive credit from Hines and Jesse Brown VAs.
Liberty Unit 289 is offering a $500 Mary Anderson Memorial nontraditional scholarship for those who are currently in college or are returning to college. Scholarship applications are available from Cinda Held at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications are due Aug. 1.
Jocelyn Schultz won the unit’s $500 Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship, Clay Tabbert won the unit’s $300 Gladys Nippe Memorial Scholarship, and Calla Roney won the $300 Martha Mathis Memorial Scholarship.
Liberty Unit 289 is hosting the American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State Orientation on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Strasburg Community Center.
In March, the Unit learned of a 93-year-old veteran, Recil Troxel, whose daughter was wanting him to receive birthday cards from as many people as possible. The unit sent a birthday card to him. Pam Hutton-Campbell brought an article from the Marlow Review, where this veteran received cards from all over the United States.
The 19th District Summer Convention will be on Saturday, June 8, in Farmer City. Delegates are Jill Layton, Cinda Held, Linda Oakley, Sarah Wyckoff and Pam Hutton-Campbell. Alternates are Caralea Smith, Bonnie Lawrence, Jamie Brown, Becca Caldwell and Evelyn Augenstein.
The Department of Illinois American Legion Auxiliary Convention will be July 11-13. Delegates will be Cinda Held, Jill Layton, Linda Oakley and Sarah Wyckoff.
Liberty Unit 289 will be distributing poppies on Saturday, May 25. Volunteers are Holly Giertz, Linda Oakley and Evelyn Augenstein.
Mike Manhart will be attending the Honor Flight in June.
