Auxiliary members were encouraged to contact Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Tammy Duckworth about voting yes on the Veteran House Act of 2020. The bill overwhelmingly passed the House. This legislation offers housing assistance to our homeless men and women veterans. The thought of a veteran without a home is not what we would expect of our community, so helping them find a home and get on their feet is the right thing to do.
Information was shared with members about the amount of support that the Auxiliary provides to veterans, their families, VA hospitals, scholarships and youth activities. $6.2 million provides goods and services to veterans, active duty service members and their families. $2.7 millions is spent on hospital projects and items. $165,133 was provided for scholarships. Then there are the volunteers and activities – 44,638 volunteer is hospital programs, 413,296 youths participate in Auxiliary activities designed just for them, 119,613 contacts were made to legislators to encourage them to support or not support legislation that affects veterans and 374,865 US flags were distributed. This data comes from all of the local Auxiliaries.
Information was also shared about the National Home in which veterans and their families live while they try to get on their feet. The VFW National Home is located in Eaton Ridge, Michigan. There are 42 single family homes on 629 acres. Illinois sponsors two of the homes. There are playgrounds, a community center, a licensed day care facility, recreational areas, a guest lodge, a chapel and an administration building. The local VFW Auxiliary makes a donation to the home very year.
The VFW Auxiliary has a cancer fund, to which each member donates 50 cents to at each our monthly meetings plus the Auxiliary pays a yearly fee. The fund offers $500 to any Auxiliary member who is diagnosed with cancer.
A fraud prevention alert was provided at the meeting and sent to members via email to remind them to write out 2020 and not abbreviate it to 20, especially on notarized documents, contracts and checks.
