The two Rams that advanced to State both faced wrestlers from Plano in the 1st round on Thursday. Senior Alex Jones won and freshman Jared Finley lost.
Jones (30-5), the 3rd ranked wrestler at 132, defeated Ivan Lopez (22-12), the 16th ranked wrestler, by sticking him in the 2nd period (3:27).
According to Daily Union correspondent Barry Brown, Jones wrestled really strong the entire match, dominating Lopez in all areas.
In the 1st period, Jones scored a 2-point take down, but Lopez got loose scoring a 1-point escape. The match progressed into the 2nd period, where Jones scored another take down and eventually turned Lopez for 3 back points.
In the 3rd period, Jones took it to Lopez again and was able to turn him again and win by pin/fall.
Friday, Alex will face 5th ranked Austin McPeek (Jr.) (34-5) in the quarterfinal round.
Finley (31-8), the 14th ranked wrestler at 120 pounds, lost to junior Jose Villarreal (33-6), the 8th ranked wrestler, in the preliminary round.
According to Daily Union correspondent Barry Brown, Finley came out aggressive and wrestled well for a freshman. Villarreal was in control most of the match but Finley made him work hard to keep that control.
In the first period, Villarreal scored a 2-point takedown and turned him for 3 hard earned back points. In the second period, Villarreal scored in the same manner, 2-point take down and 3 more back points. It was the same in the 3rd. Villarreal won by 15-0 tech fall in the 3rd (4:47).
For Finley to advance into the wrestlebacks Villarreal must beat Josh Alber (So)(40-0), the #1 ranked 120-pounder.
