It’s the time of year that many people dread: Filing their taxes. However, CEFS Shelby County Outreach Office can help make that process a bit easier.

Shelby County Outreach Coordinator Dawn Morgason said that CEFS can process the simpler tax forms, such as the 1040 and 1040EZ but does not tackle the more complex forms.

“We e-file them here,” Morgason said, adding that if the filer chooses to direct deposit their refund it is quicker than waiting for the check to arrive in the mail.

Morgason explained that two of the staff members at CEFS took part in IRS training in Springfield and Effingham to train for this year’s tax season. The program that they were trained to use is called Tax Wise, which was developed by the IRS.

Morgason personally believes that e-filing and direct deposit is the way to go.

“It’s faster and the chance of theft is less,” she said.

Morgason said that people can make arrangements to come in and have their taxes filed while they are present so any questions may be addressed immediately. People may leave their forms at the office to be processed and then come back and sign the various forms.

CEFS started doing taxes on February 6 and will continue to do through April 15. So far, they have kept pretty busy.

“We have a stack that needs to be done and we’ve completed about 50 plus,” Morgason said.

Morgason said that a lot of the people who have came in have used CEFS for their tax needs in the past.

“We’ve had a lot of repeat customers,” she said. “The price is right.”

And nothing can beat the price CEFS offers.

“We do all our tax returns for free,” Morgason said.

This service is also available to everyone.

Morgason said that there is a real need for this service in Shelby County and said that most clients take advantage of the Earned Income Credit.

“The Earned Income Credit really helps single parent families, giving some added help with bills this time of year,” she said. “It really helps those who are working and trying but not making the big bucks.”

Morgason also said that since CEFS offers this tax service for free, the money saved can be put towards other expenses

She said that the service is also a big money saver, since the money that would have been spent to file taxes spent to have taxes done can be used to pay other bills.
