There was a fatal car/motorcycle accident in Shelbyville on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of County Road 1950E and Route 16, where the BP gas station is located.
Illinois State Police District 10 units were dispatched to the crash scene, along with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Shelbyville Fire Department. Traffic was diverted and authorities urged motorists to consider using alternate routes and to exercise caution when traveling in the area.
At 4:40 p.m. Nick Orndorff of the Illinois State Police District 10 released the following information.
A fatal traffic crash occurred at Il RT 16 at Shelby CR 1945E-Shelby County on August 29, 2019 at 1:07 p.m. It involved a 2000 Buick LeSabre and a Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
The Drivers of the Buick was Dustin W Haun, 28, of Shelbyville. The driver of the motorcycle was not revealed pending notification. There were no passengers.
According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, Unit #1 was stopped at the stop sign on northbound Shelby CR 1945E at IL RT 16, preparing to turn west onto IL Rt 16. Unit #2 was traveling east on IL RT 16. Unit #1 failed to yield the right of way and pulled out into the intersection in order to turn west onto IL Rt 16. Unit #2 struck unit #1 in the eastbound lanes.
The driver of Unit #2 died due to injuries sustained as a result of the crash. Unit #1 driver was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. Seatbelts were worn. Unit #1 driver was cited for 625 ILCS 5/11-904: Failure to Yield - Stop or Yield Intersection.
All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
