Vehicle recovered submerged in an a swollen creek northwest of Argenta
Rural Macon County – On Monday, Jan. 12, a 73-year-old resident of Shelbyville, Cleveland Johnson, was recovered from a swollen creek along Lake Fork Road near the intersection of Leghorn Road.
The vehicle was traveling westbound on Lake Fork Road when the driver went into a ditch and struck a bridge support over Lake Fork Creek. The vehicle flipped and overturned into the approximately 6-7 feet of water. Road conditions at the time of the recovery were poor and the recovery was hampered by winds, drifting snow, and frigid temperatures.
The driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene by Macon County Coroner Michael Day. An autopsy in Bloomington, Illinois revealed that Johnson died as a result of an accidental drowning. The accident is being investigated by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.
Maroa Fire Department, Hickory Point Fire Department, the Decatur Fire Department Dive Team, and Prairieland Towing provided support in recovering the vehicle.
