Young men and women from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg and Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville spent the night living in boxes on June 23. This was a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County. Those seven young people raised over $1,036.

“Habitat had sent a letter to our church asking for fund raising ideas and we thought it sounded interesting,” said Jacob Dilley, one of the youth involved. “We had a lot of fun and raised money for a good cause.”

The other members of that group were Brian Gaddis, Cody Snyder, Sydney Furr, Jonathan Becker, Stephanie Jack and Shelby Storm.

Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County is finishing up their fourth house. That house is located at 1311 Broadway, Windsor. The partner family is Michael and Tiffany Bridges and their three children. The House Blessing will be held on Sunday, August 27, at 2:00 p.m.

Tiffany Bridges said the family is getting excited.

“We are all getting very excited. We are getting close. The house is almost done,” said Bridges. “We feel like this is a dream come true for us.”

Elma Rincker, Publicity Director for Habitat said that organization is looking for applicants for their next house.

“A lot of applications have gone out, but very few have come back to us,” said Rincker. “I strongly encourage the public to apply, you won’t know if you qualify until you try.”

You may pick up an application at Rincker’s business which is Merle Norman Cosmetics located at 1107 N. Broadway, Shelbyville. You may also pick up an application from Susie Kensil who is Chairperson of the Family Selection Committee. Kensil’s work phone is 774-3121 and her home phone is 774-4557.

“If people have questions or need assistance in filling out those applications blanks, Susie or a member of her committee will provide that assistance,” continued Rincker.

Rincker wanted to point out that two of the four houses that organization has built are outside of Shelbyville. One is in Oconee and of course, the other is in Windsor.

“I want to emphasis we are a county-wide organization,” Rincker said. “We want to build in every community in the county.”

She said partner families can specify which community in Shelby County they wish to reside in. That is why applications are encouraged from all over Shelby County.

Rincker said if a family can afford $350 in rent, they can probably afford the mortgage payment on a Habitat house. She pointed out that there are other criteria to meet such as, they are living in sub-standard housing, they must be employed and have the income to meet the mortgage payment and willing to put in the “sweat equity.

Rincker said Habitat is always looking for donations. She said donations from individuals or groups are sincerely welcomed or if a group can hold a fundraiser such as the Lutheran youth those funds would be greatly appreciated.

Habitat is also collecting empty ink cartridges. Jim Bolinger said they accept any brand name of cartridge. Those cartridges may be dropped off at Ace Hardware located in the Johnstown Mall on Highway 16, Shelbyville or Mid Illinois Technologies located at 142 N. Morgan, Shelbyville.

Another need habitat is working to fill is that of volunteers.

“We are always looking for volunteers,” said Rincker. “Whatever you can do we have a job for you.”

Rincker said Habitat would love to send a speaker to your group or organization to talk about Habitat’s mission. She said she would come and talk or she can line up a speaker, just give her a call. Again her business phone is 774-4233 and home is 459-2378.
