The Annual Remember 5k Run/Walk to benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life ran its race on Saturday, despite the early morning showers.
Forecasts had the rain continuing all the way up to the start of the race at 8 a.m. But the rain stopped more than an hour before that and the annual race went off with 60 participants and raised about $3,000. It was about an average turnout, according to one of the race directors, Jeff Wood.
"We usually have between 45-70 participants and raise $3,000 to $3,500 dollars," Wood said.
All those who pre-registered showed up for the race, despite the weather, except for two people. They also had a good percentage of people show up on Saturday morning to register and participate.
The Remember 5k was in its sixth year. It was originally started as part of the "Cuffs for Cancer," an effort led by law enforcement. A few years ago it became part of the Relay for Life. The course starts at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Visitor's Center runs to Forest Park and back.
“The 5K and the 1-mile walk give participants a chance to honor cancer survivors and victims,” said organizer Judy Wood. “Almost everyone has been touched by cancer either themselves or through someone close to them.”
Awards were given to the top three runners in each age category. Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society for research and services for cancer patients.
