Stew-Stras Junior High softball bounced back from their first loss last week in the Beecher City tournament title game to Mulberry Grove by taking it out on Windsor on Monday, 17-1, in just three innings. After making quick work of Windsor, the Stars then got hung up in a 9-inning marathon at Newton on Thursday, losing in the bottom of the 9th to Jasper County, 5-4.

The Stars wasted no time at Windsor, scoring six runs in the 1st inning and ten runs in the 2nd. Haylee Mathis, already with four home runs, almost hit for the cycle against the Trojans. Mathis had a single, a double and her fifth home run. Brittani Tabbert also went deep and smacked a double. Courtney Schultz also doubled. Baylee Quast notched then win.

After scoring a ton of runs in most of their games this season and getting most of their wins by the 10-run rule, the Stars ran into a pitcher, like vs. Mulberry Grove, as dominating as the Star ace, Courtney Schultz. Schultz allowed solo runs in the 1st and 2nd, then held J.P. scoreless for three innings. However, J.P. only allowed one runs from the Stars in the 1st and held them scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Stars took the lead with a 2-run at bat, 3-2. They held that lead for two innings, but then Newton answered with a 2-run inning in the bottom of the 6th to reclaim the lead, 4-3. Stew-Stras got that run back in their next at bat and knotted the game in the 7th, 4-4. The pitchers continued to rule for the next two at bats, but Newton finally broke through in the bottom of the 9th with the game-winning run, 5-4.

Despite the loss, Mathis went yard again, blasting her sixth home run of the year.

This one cleared the fence and went several rows into the bleachers. Baylee Quast also came through with two of the six other Star hits.

Stew-Stras competed in the Cumberland Tounament last weekend and went 2-1, losing to Cumberland, 3-2, in the title game. Stew-Stras beat Beecher City, 11-0 and beat Effingham, 10-1. Stew-Stras then hosted BC on Monday and won again 14-4. (Results from Cumberland and the BC game will appear in Thursday's print edition.)
