Windsor School Board led their monthly meeting last night and discussed saving money on the electric bill, repairs to be made on the new gym floor and ceiling, a scoreboard upgrade and internet access for homework.

After approving the minutes, paying the bills and approving the treasurer’s report the Windsor School Board heard about an energy grant the school had received.

School Superintendent Sharon Keck had applied for an energy grant and received $29,000 to conserve on the electric bill. The district will be changing some fixtures and retro-fitting some others.

“We will have less bulbs, but more light,” Keck said.

It was also decided to accept bids on work needed in the new gym.

“There are no leaks, but there is a problem with the ceiling yellowing and flaking,” Keck said.

The bids would be for work on the gym floor and the ceiling and hopes are to have the work dome this summer.

The district also purchased a wireless controller for the scoreboard on the baseball field that would be interchangeable with the one inside the gym.

Mrs. Yallaly, the district librarian reported on data bases that are available to both students and parents in the district. Parents and students can access these data bases at home to help the students primarily with their homework.

World Book and EBASCO, an online reader’s guide to periodicals, are the two data bases presently available. Normally, access to those data bases would cost, but the district has sent the general password to the parents so the data bases can be used for free.

The board approved the school calendar for 2006-2207, which sees a start date of August 22 for teachers and August 23 for students. The school year will end on June 4, 2007, if they have to use all of their snow days. The calendar is similar to this year.

The school district does not have days off for Casimir Pulaski Day, Martin Luther King’s Day or Lincoln’s Birthday. They will observe a day off for President’s Day and for Columbus Day.

The board went into executive session to begin discussing staffing needs for 2006-2007. Keck said that in that meeting the typically evaluate first year teachers and begin to look at the numbers of enrollment for next year.

After coming out of executive session the board voted to hire Glen Richards as a substitute bus driver.
