On Monday, May 22, there was a minor traffic accident in front of the post office. A 1999 Chevrolet pick up truck had just parked in front of the building when a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck started to back out of a parking space next to it. The backing vehicle clipped the rear fender of the parked truck. There was no injuries, however there was over $500 in damage.

On Thursday there was a minor collision in the high school parking lot over lunch hour. There were no injuries but a 2000 Dodge Dakota sustained over $500 in damages.

On Saturday, May 27, there was another minor traffic accident in the Johnstown Mall parking lot. This accident occurred between a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck and a Chevrolet Cavalier. The pickup truck backed into the side of the car. There were no injuries. The car had over $500 in damages.

On Friday the 26th of May at about 10:30 a.m., the police department received a c complaint of the reckless operation of a motor vehicle in the area of 9th street beach. Upon investigating that complaint, a traffic citation was issued. The 32 year old Shelbyville female allegedly lied to the officer about her name and address during the traffic stop. It was later learned that there was an outstanding warrant for this female. The following morning, Crystal L. Williams, aka Crystal L. Gregory was located and taken into custody for both the arrest warrant and obstruction of justice. She was transported to the detention center for processing and held for arraignment.

On Saturday morning at approximately 8:45 p.m., officers took a report of damage to a vehicle that was left unattended in the Johnstown Mall parking lot. Upon returning to the vehicle after shopping, the owner noticed several scratches on the passenger side of the 2005 PT Cruiser. It has not been determined if these scratches were caused by accident or intentionally, no witnesses have come forward at this time.

At about 11 p.m. on Saturday, a 19 year old Shelbyville man was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle while his driver’s license was suspended.

On Sunday, Todd R. Johnston of Shelbyville was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by Effingham County. Johnston was transported to the detention center, where he posted bond and then was released.

On Sunday evening, officers took a theft report from a beach visitor. The Mattoon woman had a cell phone stolen from a beach bag left on a picnic table. The cell phone was valued at over $500. There were no reported witness to the theft.
