The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reported that between January 9 and February 5 they made arrests for child abuse, possible animal abuse, and substance abuse, among other arrests.

On January 9 in Prairie Township at 10:13 p.m., Breeana B. Otto, 26, of Stewardson was arrested and issued citations for driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, after deputies responded to a report of a reckless driver near the area of Rt. 32 and 600 N. She was transported to the Detention Center and later posted bond and was released. 

On January 26 at 7:20 p.m. deputies were dispatched to a residence in Herrick in reference to an out of control individual. Upon arrival, they found Gloria J. Smith, 70, of Herrick to be out of control and intoxicated. She was arrested for domestic battery and transported to the Detention Center. She later posted bond and was released.

On January 27 at 6:38 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Tower Hill in regards to a report of an individual stating her child had been abused by a babysitter. After an investigation was completed Brett Snively, 26, of Tower Hill was arrested for aggravated battery on a child under 13 years of age. He was transported to the Detention Center awaiting a court appearance. He later posted bond and was released. 

On January 29 at 3:54 p.m., deputies were dispatched for possible animal cruelty towards a dog at a residence in Stewardson. Deputies found the owner to be Lanny D. Groves, 53, of Stewardson.

Upon investigation, it was found there was no adequate shelter with only an non-insulated igloo style house with no straw or bedding and no water, as it was knocked over with a chunk of ice lying next to it.  

The dog was taken into temporary custody due to being exposed outside to life-threatening cold weather conditions throughout the entire day and previous night. Mr. Groves was arrested for violation of the humane care for animals act for cruel treatment. He was transported to the Detention Center for processing. Her later posted bond and was released.

Also on January 29 at 8 a.m., deputies were called to a residence in Oconee in reference to a domestic battery on a male juvenile. Upon arrival deputies spoke with his mother, identified as Carmen S. Carlock, 36, of Pana. After questioning, she was arrested for domestic battery and transported to the Detention Center awaiting a court appearance.

On January 31 at 10:06 p.m., deputies were dispatched  to a residence in Herrick in regards to paramedics requesting assistance for an assault. Upon arrival paramedics advised they were attempting to treat the patient who was intoxicated and became violent and choked/punched the paramedic.

The patient was identified as Bobby Beck, 51, of Herrick. He was transported to St. Anthony Hospital for treatment. Upon release from the hospital, he was arrested for aggravated battery and transported to the Detention Center.

Deputies also responded to a complaint on January 28 in Lakewood Township at 3:42 a.m. about an individual walking on Rt. 128 just north of Cowden. Upon arrival the individual was identified as David E. Jones, 47, of Pana. It was found he had an active arrest warrant out of Effingham County. He was transported to the Detention Center for processing.

On January 21 at 11:45 p.m., Dustin M. Shook, 25, of Mattoon was arrested after a stop at Rice & Stevenson Streets for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no valid registration, possession of drug paraphernalia and an active arrest warrant out of Moultrie County. He was transported to the Detention Center, where he posted bond and was released.

On February 5 at 10:22 p.m., after a traffic stop at the Citgo Station in Stewardson, Brian K. Calvert, 37, of Shelbyville was arrested for driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured vehicle and an active arrest warrant out of Effingham County. He was transported to the Detention Center for processing. He later posted bond and was released.
