Two Shelby County prep stars, sophomore Kasey Bean and freshman Elizabeth Bowyer, despite being underclassmen, were key leaders in Blackburn College’s volleyball attack last fall.

Sophomore Kasey Bean played for the 2017 IHSA Class A State Runner-up Windsor/Stew-Stras Hatchets. Elizabeth Bowyer played for the 2016 Sectional Finalist Shelbyville Rams.

Her freshman season (2018), Kasey Bean, as an outside/right side hitter, was behind some senior hitters (including 2-time National Runner-up Kendall Knop) and finished with 44 kills on 165 attacks, with 20 digs, 7 blocks, and one ace for 48.5 points.

Her sophomore season (2019) Bean broke out with 200 kills on 637 attacks, with 97 digs, 22 blocks, and 16 aces for 229.5 points.

Bowyer joined Bean in 2019 as a middle hitter. She smacked 203 kills on 548 attacks with 165 digs, 60 blocks and 10 aces for 253.5 points.

Junior middle, Lucy Magnussen led the team with 254 kills, 53 blocks, and 319.5 points. Then came, Bowyer, the freshman middle (203 kills, 60 blocks, 253.5 pts). Junior Kaitlyn Wiegand had 209 kills, 44 blocks, and 246.5 points, followed by Bean, sophomore outside (200 kills, 22 blocks, 229.5 pts).

Bean had 10, almost 13 matches out of 26 with double-digit kills. Bowyer had 9, almost 12 matches out of 26 with double-digit kills.

Bean had 10 matches with double-digit points. Bowyer had 12 matches with double-digit points. They had six matches with both players scoring double-digit points.

Against Lincoln Christian University, both had 10 points. Bean had 10 kills and Bowyer had 9 kills, 2 block assists.

Against Fontbonne, Bean had a team-high 17.5 points and Bowyer 14.5. Bean had 13 kills, 4 aces and a block assist. Bowyer had 10 kills, an ace, 2 solo blocks, and 3 block assists for 14.5 points.

Against Principia, Bean had 11.5 points and Bowyer 14.5. Bean had 10 kills, an ace, and a block assist. Bowyer had 13 kills, a block and a block assist. Against Lincoln College, Bean had 16 points and Bowyer 13. Bean had a season-high 16 kills, Bowyer had 12 kills and solo block.

Against MacMurray, Bean had 14.5 points and Bowyer 11.5. Bean had 12 kills, an ace, and a season-high 3 block assists. Bowyer had 9 kills, 1 solo block and also 3 block assists.

Against Iowa Wesleyan, both players had 12.5 points. Bean had 10 kills and 2 aces, while Bowyer had 12 kills and a block assist. Again, against Iowa Wesleyan, Bean had 16 points and Bowyer 12.5. Bean had 15 kills and an ace. Bowyer had 10 kills, 2 solo blocks and a block assist.

Bean’s season-high kill was 16 against Lincoln College. She had a season-high 4 aces against Fontbonne and a season-high 9 digs against Iowa Wesleyan (15 kills).

Her season-high attack points was against Iowa Wesleyan (17.5 pts). Her season-high solo blocks (3) were against MacMurray.

Bowyer’s season-high was 14 kills against Eureka College. She also had a season-high 4 solo blocks and tied her season-high 3 block assists. She added an ace for a season-high 20.5 attack points. She scooped 13 digs in that match.

Bowyer’s season-high service match was against Lincoln College with 3 aces. In 7 matches, she had double-digit digs. Her season-high was 15 against Principia.

Bowyer recorded four double-doubles in her freshman season. She had 10 kills and 11 digs against Monmouth College. She hit 12 kills and scooped 15 digs against Principia.

She had 14 kills and 13 digs against Eureka. She hit 12 kills and 14 digs against Iowa Wesleyan. She had a near double-double against Principia, again, with 13 kills, 8 digs.
