Bowyer signing

Shelbyville middle hitters go on to play college volleyball and Elizabeth Bowyer is no exception. Bowyer signed recently to go on and play collegiate volleyball at Blackburn College.

“I’m going to study Pre-Law and continue to play the sport I love,” said Bowyer. “The coach e-mailed me. She saw my online profile and thought I could be an addition to their team. I’m planning to play in the middle, but I did play right side in club. I’m not as tall as some, but I’m excited to play.”

Bowyer reports for school on August 15 and had practice the next day.

“Four years ago I didn’t know if this possible, maybe?” Bowyer said.

Bowyer has been a varsity player since her sophomore year at Shelbyville High School. She has never been the tallest middle, but she was always a plus for the Rams. She had big shoes to fill as a sophomore after the 4th place team in the state graduated four girls to collegiate volleyball.

She finished at SHS with 432 varsity kills, 124 blocks, 219 digs in a rotation with two middle hitters.

“I’ve always told her, you gotta play like a big girl,” said veteran Ram coach and Rapid Fire Lisa Peifer. “She’s not tall, but she can jump. She has worked a lot with the trainer. She brings versatility to them (Blackburn) at any position in the front row. She has a lot of different shots. She’ll fit there. They have got a quality player.”

Bowyer was also courted by Lincoln College and Eureka College, but held out for Blackburn. Blackburn already has Kasey Bean from the Windsor/Stew-Stras state team. Stew-Stras alum Kendall Knop, off the back-to-back NJCAA national runner-up team as a freshman and sophomore, has just finished her 4-year playing career at Blackburn. She is rumored to stay on and help coach. She is another under-sized hitter with a good vertical.
